Kitchen Wallhanging with Potholders

This wallhanging has appliqued Sunbonnet Sue's praying.   Their skirts are removable and can be used as potholders.  Here is the wallhanging with one of the potholder skirts removed:

To make this you'll need:

  • a piece of white (or light) background fabric 12" x 11"
  • a piece of fabric for the backing - 12" x 11"
  • a 13" x 12"  piece of batting (this can be polyester) for the wallhanging
  • Scraps of cotton batting to make the two potholders
  • Pigma Pen for the lettering - I used 5 pt black
  • Ribbon to use as a hanger
  • Scraps of fabric for the skirt, sleeve, hand and bonnet
  • Two velcro circle pairs to attach the skirt potholders

Using the Pigma pen, letter one of the sayings below on your background fabric.   The bottom of the lettering should be 3" from the top edge of the fabric.   You can come up with your own saying, making a personalized gift.

Using the templates for the Sunbonnet Sue's cut out the hat, sleeve and arm.  Reverse the pattern and cut another hat, sleeve and arm for the Sue facing the other way.  If you wish to turn under the edges of the appliques, add a turn-under seam allowances to the patterns.  Applique these six pieces to the wallhanging, first the hands, then the sleeve, then the hat.  Sew the "sharper" half of the two velcro circles directly under each Sunbonnet's sleeve.

Now make the potholders.  Using the skirt template, cut four from skirt fabric and two from the COTTON batting.   If you use polyester batting, these potholders will not be heat resistant.  You can also use old cotton towels (think ones) for the potholder batting.

Put a piece of batting down on a table.  On top of it layer two of the skirts, right sides together.  Sew around the skirt, leaving 2" open for turning.  Clip into the seam allowances on the curves for ease in turning and turn the potholder/skirt  right sides out.  Whipstitch the opening closed.  Sew the other half of the velcro circle at the top of the skirt.  Repeat for the second skirt.  These will be attached to the wallhanging when it is finished.

Lay the 12" x 13" piece of batting on a table, lay the wallhanging top on this right side up, now lay the wallhanging backing on this right side down.  The wall hanging top and back are right sides facing together.  Lightly trace the template for the top of the wallhanging along the top edge.  Pin together and sew around the wallhanging, leaving 2" on one side for turning.  Clip the curved seams and turn right side out.  Whipstitch the opening closed.

Now attach the skirt/potholders to their velcro circles.  Tie a bow in the center of the ribbon and tack it to the back of the wallhanging at the top.    Hang in your kitchen in a place where the potholders will come in handy!

If you wallhanging starts to sag in the center, you may need to tack a small dowel on the backside of the wallhanging for support.  You can use the dowel that comes with most fabric calendar towels.  If your potholders are heavy, this may be necessary.  Tack it about 3 1/2" down on the backside, right where the wallhanging becomes full width.

ENJOY!
