SunbonnetSue.com's Mascot block!
The original green mascot block for this site was printed on my Freshman Yearbook in High School. It was the 1970s, the height of the Holly Hobbie craze and the senior class choose Sue and Sam for the yearbook cover. Here's the way it appeared then:

From Wellsville High School's 1974 Yearbook Cover |
Sewn in 2000, by Kim Bunchuck |
I've always loved it, so I scanned it and used it for my page logo. After a few years, I decided the colors needed updating and I sewed the block that you see on the page now. The original block was not a quilt block, but done to photograph for the yearbook cover. Sam was carrying a tin-foil pail. Sue and Sam's hair were simply a loop of embroidery floss, tucked into the fabric. I decided to create an applique pattern for the block. I omitted the dried flowers, tin-foil pail and I put Sue and Sam closer together. After all they've been staring at each other now for almost 30 years!
Below are links to the pattern I created, in case you'd like to make your own. As you can see from the pattern, my Sue figure is unfinished! She's missing a hand, her apron string, a bow on her hat and her hair. I'll get to it.... someday!
Enjoy! -- Kim
