Quiltsmart Applique

This appliqué technique was championed by Eleanor Burns.  It uses interfacing to turn the raw edges under.  It is a great method for beginners.

QuiltSmart pre-prints the appliqué motif on the interfacing to make your job very easy.  Just stitch on the pattern lines, trim to a narrow seam allowance, turn the piece right side out, fuse the appliqué in place, and machine stitch around the edges.  No needle-turning, no pins, no raw edges, no tracing, no fuss.  You can finish the appliqué with hand stitching if you desire.

There are only three steps:

Step 1:   Rough cut the interfacing to separate the appliqué pattern pieces.  Place each interfacing pattern piece a a scrap of your appliqué fabric together with the rough side of the interfacing against the right side of the fabric.  Stitch on the solid printed lines.

Step 2:     Cut on the dashed lines printed just outside the stitching lines.   Turn the piece right side out.  Gently poke any points outward with a blunt tool like a knitting needle or manicure stick.
Step 3:     Arrange the parts of the appliqué on the background material and fuse in place with a hot iron set to steam.

Sew the appliqué down by machine or by hand.
