It started simply enough, my daughter wanted the Sunbonnet Sue quilt that my great-grandmother made in 1938 for my Mother. My Mom wouldn't give it up, so I decided to "copy" it for my daughter. It was my first appliqué quilt. I found the gentle curves of her bonnet and the simple dress easy to work on. I had fun collecting all the fabrics for the quilt. I wanted to make it a "charm" sunbonnet quilt with all different fabrics for the dresses and bonnets. I had so much fun making the blocks, that I organized a Sunbonnet block swap in 1997. I posted the blocks to a web site and visitors started coming. I got e-mail from all over the world asking for patterns. So the site grew. My husband wanted to know what I wanted for my 40th birthday. He thought "my own domain" was a strange request, but he bought it for me anyway. Sunbonnetsue.com was born! Kim Bunchuck's past -- I started quilting in 1982. I was fresh out of college and looking for a hobby. I was growing tired of latch hook projects and macramé. I found a log cabin quilt pattern and was hooked! I am a self-taught quilter, but my grandmother taught me to sew and embroider. I've won merit award ribbons for my quilts. I recently displayed a Sunbonnet Sue quilt at the 2001 Houston International Quilt Festival. I am the past president of the Eastern Long Island Quilter's Guild. I have taught workshops on string piecing, two sided quilts, quilting with computers, and Sunbonnet Sue appliqué. Prior to quilting, I worked as a computer instructor. Currently I serve as the technology Director for Greenport Schools, the school my children attend. The short day schedule and summers off give me the freedom to explore my quilting passion without breaking the bank! I live in Greenport, New York with my husband Jim and our four children.
