Donate Some time sewing a Sunbonnet Quilt Block

If you are a quilter and you'd like to help fight Breast Cancer, we have a fun project you can get involved in. To Support the organization "Making Memories" on-line quilters are making a Sunbonnet Sue quilt.

The goal of Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation is to grant wishes to people who have been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. They support this effort through these fundraising programs:

You can read about their fundraising efforts on their website.

Our Project

Visiters to Sunbonnetsue.com and BadSueQuilts.com have been swapping blocks for several years. This time we'd like to give a little back and donate a quilt for the cause.

Brides against Breast Cancer donate their bridal gowns for fundraising. These gowns are sold with the profits going to support the Making Memories Foundations. So no donation is wasted, memory quilts are constructed from bridal gowns that cannot be resold for one reason or another, such as torn hems, wine stains, or color imperfections resulting from improper storage. Stitchers cut apart accessories, remove embellishments, and transform the fabrics into a queen size quilt top. For additional information regarding Making Memories "Quilters Against Breast Cancer" you may directly contact, Marla Wyant, National Quilt Administrator, Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation.

Our groups is going to construct a Sunbonnet Sue quilt from these donated Wedding Gowns. One side of the quilt will have traditional Sunbonnet Sue blocks depicting sweet brides, but on the flip side of the quilt will be less-traditional "bad" sue blocks, showing the humor needed to weather the storm of serious illness.

We'd like you to donate your time to make a block for this quilt. We'll send you a kit of wedding dress fabric, trim, and a background fabric for the block. You'll sew a block and send it back to us. This quilt will be used for fundraising for the non-profit foundation.

Here is our timeline:

BLOCKS ARE COMING IN!!! CLICK HERE FOR THE GALLERY

We'll put the block up on this website as they come in and we'll share a picture of the finished quilt with you. When the quilt is finished, we'll put a photo of it online so you can see your efforts. Then the quilt will be donated to the Making Memories foundation to help in their fundraising efforts.

So, if you want to make a block, click here to e-mail Kim Bunchuck of Sunbonnetsue.com. Make sure you let her know if you are making a "BAD" or "Traditional" Sue block. You'll need to included your mailing address so she can mail you a kit to make one 10" block. Make the block and mail it back. Your only expenses will be your time, any fabric you add to the block kit and the postage to mail it back to New York.
