Sunbonnet Sewing Case

This sunbonnet sewing case is the perfect size to take anywhere.   Inside you can hold a spool of thread, some needles and other small notions.   I used a piece of an old feedsack to sew mine!  That way I get to show off the wonderful old fabric.

This is an nice kit to sew for yourself or a gift for a friend when filled with some needles, thread and a small pair of scissors.

Materials needed:

Prepare the Bonnet:

Cut 1 piece of print fabric using template A, making sure to place the pattern on the fold.  Cut another for the plain fabric.  Put right sides together and sew the two together, leaving open at the bottom for turning.  Turn & Press.   Whipstitch the opening closed.  Gather the bonnet along the gathering lines.

Prepare the Brim:

Cut two pieces of foam using template C.

Cut two solid and two print pieces of template B.  Fold the fabric, so that when you cut you have mirror images of the template (one left, one right).  Put rights sides together and sew each print to a plain, leaving a section open for turning.   Turn and insert one piece of the foam into each brim.  You may have to trim the foam down slightly to fit.  Whipstitch the opening closed.

Tuck the brims inside the bonnet opening.     The ends of the brim line up with the flat bottom of the bonnet.   You can hand sew them in place or sew right through the foam on your sewing machine.  The little bonnet will open up like this:

Sew snaps or velcro attachment to keep the bonnet closed.  See illustration above.

Here's what the inside of my bonnet looks like:

You can stick needles into the brim on the inside of the bonnet.   Enjoy your new sewing "Sunbonnet".
