This patterns reminds me of the days
when housewives wore aprons all day. This apron has a built in bonus. After
the kitchen work is done, remove the bonnet, button two buttons and wear it as a sunbonnet
for your gardening.
As a Sunbonnet
As an apron
To make this apron you'll need:
- 1 yard 45" fabric, lightweight cotton or cotton/blend
- 1 package contrasting double fold bias tape
- thread to match
- 2 buttons 3/4"
Print the pattern templates to make the pieces:

apron's pocket/bonnet's brim
Cut:
2 of apron piece on fold of fabric
1 of brim/pocket on fold of fabric
2 waist band pieces (2 1/4" x 12 1/2")
1 Sashing strip 3 1/4" x width of fabric
(cut this in half to make 2 sashing pieces approximately 3 1/4 " x
22 1/4")
Sewing:
- Sew bias tape across the top edge of the brim/pocket piece on top.
- Layer the two apron pieces WRONG sides together with brim/pocket piece op top. Pin
the 3 layers together. Sew down the center of the pocket, from the top edge to the
bottom edge through all three layers forming two pockets.
- Starting at the top edge, sew bias tap all around both sides and bottom finishing off
raw edges. DO NOT SEW ANY BIAS TAPE ACROSS THE TOP EDGE OF THE APRON.
- With right sides together, sew across both ends and along one long edge of the two waist
band pieces. Turn right sides out. Stitch back edge of band to back to edge of
apron. Fold under 1/4" and top-stitch from edge of band to from top edge of
apron.
- On long edges of sashing strips, turn under 1/4" and 1/4" again to form a
hem. Top stitch. Repeat for both long edges and across one end of each
sash. Fold hemmed end on a 45 degree angle to the other side and top stitch.
- On the other end of each sash, make a pleat and zig-zag raw edges. Attach to apron
at waist band seam line.
- Work bottom hole through all three layers at placement mark.
- Sew on two buttons at placement mark.
TO make into a bonnet, button each side.
